Willow is an independent sort of mare, she likes to have her foals on the lawn during the day. Yesterday, Saturday, May 12th, about noon I looked over to the east of the lawn and there was Willow and a dark shadow moving behind her. Immediately I know that she had just dropped her foal. I have a theory about horses and where they should foal. Keep them in the barn and they get lazy...the foals are not as eager to get up and run off....let them foal outside and within minutes of dropping a foal they are on their feet, ready to flee if need be.
Of course there is little reason to run these days when you are born on the lawn in a fenced area, but this little kid was up moving off with mom, then nursing in less than 10 minutes.
I am tempted to call him Toad Hill's Dark Shadow. More photos to come.
