Toad Hill's Slate Finds a New Home

Toad Hill's Slate was foaled in May, 2008. He placed 3rd in Top Ten multicolor and Reserve Champion for Produce of Dam (for Willow in 2009) with Summer Breeze,  in 2009 he was then sold to Kate who spent many hours with her first mini training him for jumping and tricks. His new name is now Gus.

Gus was a fast learning and learned how to walk over obstacles and jump.  Below are some of his photos.

Kate is now in college and Gus was by himself, without a mini for a buddy. So Kate started looking for a good home for Gus. Another friend of mine, Debbie saw the ad and called about him. One thing lead to another and now Gus will be trained for driving and help Debbie with her hobby which is driving minis.

Below is a photo of Lincoln and Baldrige (same age as Gus) pulling one of Debbie's wagons in the Christmas, 2013, parade.

Toad Hill's Run for the Roses

Rosey is growing up. These photos were taken summer 2010. I wish I could show all my horses, but since I am so busy with three or four black and white pintos, Rosey will not be shown.

Her sire is Toad Hill's Rusty Spot and she is small.

Rosie is the sweetest filly, easy to work around, is patient while being clipped and her hooves trimmed. She is two years old in this photo and really could have made a nice show mini, but I had two others I wanted to show...so Rosie stayed home.

She is a palomino pinto, her beautiful blue eyes that a highlighted by mascara (black eyeliner). around her blue eyes, and a dark colored muzzle. If you look at her head, she has palomino coloring below her ears.

Alone with all these good traits, I measured Rosie August 3rd, 2010 and she is under 34 inches.
Oh, did I also mention she has inherited her sire's curly mane and tail.

More Rosie

The kids were out today, a really sunny day. Rosie is in front. Slate is behind, and behind Slate is Stetson (my monster mini-- he's about 40 inches tall).
To the right of Rosie is Link.

Rosie is a lot smaller than Lincoln. With all her winter coat you can barely tell she has a palomino color under all that cremello coat.
Rosie looks solid cremello in most of the photos I have now that she has her winter coat. I tried clipping her head to show off the medicine hat.





The foal photos do not really show off Rosie's color so I have included one of her when she was younger.

Rosie has a medicine hat (but her ears are cremello), color around the sides of her muzzle, and from her neck down to between the front legs. Unfortunately with her fur now, you really can't tell the color from the cremello base. Her mom is behind her (Toad Hill's High Octane) who is a solid.

Let's start by saying: "Can you say Multi-Color Champion 2009?" That's what I was thinking when I saw this new foal who is 2008 model born to Willow this morning. Willow is a consistant producer of color and was last year's National Champion in Produce of dam.

So what about the foal? Born May 24 over Memorial Day weekend. There's a name in there somewhere, just haven't figured it out yet. Anyway I suspect he (most likely) will be a dapple grey like his big brother Phantom.

Kiss Me Kate and Paint Me Picasso are also out of the same dam and were the two shown in the produce of dam class.

So give me a day or two to really get to know this colt and I will write more.

Mom (Willow) below is having a bad hair day in the photo below, but how many moms look this good after giving birth to a 40 pound baby that morning?

Toad Hill's Run For the Roses

Thursday morning (May 1, 2008) I had to leave early since I was to attend Lincoln Examiner training about two and a half hours away. At 4:30 AM I stumbled into the barn half awake to feed the mares and found that one had foaled. No, it was not the one that we were waiting for, it was her neighbor, the mare I had put in the stall next to Kibbles so that Kibbles would not be lonely.
High Octane had given birth to a medicine hat, pale sorrel pinto foal (best guess about 4:00 AM). This was High Octane's first and at first glance it looked all bones and legs. I did a quick check-- colt and finished chores, got to the meeting by 8:15 AM and had decided to name him: Baldrige. (For those of you not aware of the Baldrige Award, it is an award for excellence for companies. That's all I plan to say about it--check it out in Google for more info.) The Lincoln Award is the state equivalent.
By the time I got home that night, the foal looked more filled out and pretty cute. Naturally I did a second check..oops, girl. Now that great name got wasted and I had to start thinking about a new one. What to name her now?
Too late folks...her name is Toad Hill's Run for the Roses. Why, the Kentucky Derby is this weekend. I did not select May Day, or even Take Me Out To the Ball Game (today is the 100 th anniversary of the song).

So Friday, I go to work and tell everyone. Come home early and..oh my, another hatchling. Finally Kibbles had hers. Guess High Octane's foal inspired Kibbles.

I will be checking this later, but this one is a colt (99% sure, that's better than Six Sigma folks). Somehow, I don't feel like this one is a "Baldrige." Got to start thinking about another name.

Toad Hill's Lincoln Award

So the long awaited foal arrived. He was mentioned in the previous blog, a day after Rosie was foaled, He and his mom are the last photo in that blog.

Mom, Toad Hill's Kibbles N Bits, is a 33 inch, dun pinto mare foaled in 2003. This mare should have been registered AMHA too, but I decided at the last minute not to bother registering her. This colt is her third foal, the first is Toad Hill's Grapenuts and the second was a sorrel colt named Brownie by his new owners. The sire is Toad Hill's Rust Spot (Pedigrees at end of this blog.)

For now I am calling him Lincoln (Link for short). To the right is the photo that will go with his registration papers. Seems like all the foals this year are very friendly, coming up, wanting to chew on me and be petted. Link reminds me of another horse we own, Stetson. Like Stetson, Link is very a very flashy dark sorrel.
Link is a long legged colt, but with a sire who is 32 inches and mare at 33 inches, he should stay in that range when fully grown.
He is bright eyed, curious, full of energy and a lot of fun to watch as he chases the other foals around the pasture.

Toad Hill's ????? No Name Yet Filly

Saturday, March 29th, was the day that Rebel went to the handlers to prepare for the 2008 show season. We left after doing chores about 9 AM and was back home about 2:30 PM. After getting back into the house, I happened to look at a north facing window and saw one of the mares in the corner of the north pasture all by herself. Wind blowing out of the east, but she was in the windbreak near the evergreens. I looked and thought that it was strange she was there away from the other mare...I was putting on a coat to go out and check her, but before I went out I looked out the window again...a small gray object was standing beside her, and it moved.

"Pilgrims had a foal!!! We have to get out there and bring them in!!" and we rushed out, my friend locked the gate to prevent the mares from coming back into the pasture while I went down with oats just in case the mare decided she did not want to come in. Everything worked out fine, mare is now in the barn with her filly and all the bred mares have been moved to the pasture ajacent to the foaling barn. The first day Pilgrim was exposed to the stallion was May 18th last year. She had her feet trimmed three days ago, and did not look pregnant and I neglect to just check to see if she was making bag. She certainly snuck this one in on us.
Color is always a challenge with minis...Pilgrim is black with a white on rump and tail. Gatsby is a dapple gray pinto. This filly looks like she has a wide black stripe from her mane through her tail, but she lightens up as the color moves from stripe around and down the body. She does has a snip, star and a little white between the snip up to the eyes.
So now I have decided to call the filly Toni, but a need a good official name that uses Toni in it. Any suggestions?
