TOAD HILL'S GHOST BUSTERS is LWO positive and HOMOZYGOUS black.

He is heterozygous for Tobiano.   The photos below are when he was about a week old in "baby hair."

Last night (May 16th), I got up before 10 pm to check on horses before going to bed. One on the lawn, almost exactly where Willow had foaled was Katey with a very long legged "tovero" (I think she may have both LWO and tobinao genes, will test for both) foal.

Since we did not have Fancy Pants around (the sire of her first three foals) last year, we decided to breed her to Avalanche, a LWO overo, 33.5 inches. Now Katey is 32" and it did worry me, but I was assured by vets she should be okay, since the mare biologically controls the size of the fetus.

I was very surprised to see such a tall little guy. Can't believe how all those legs fit inside little Katey.

Does this foal have a medicine hat, only one ear is black, the other is white.

With all the excitement, little kid takes a nap with Katey watching over her.

NOTE: As I was creating this post I received a call from Cindy, a lady I had sole Toni Terrific, an all black mare to. She was all excited, Toni had her first foal...a filly last night as well. The sire: Avalance, the same as Katey's foal. Must have been a three some that night. I will go up tomorrow and get photos of Toni's foal to post under Avalanche's post.  :-)

Toad Hill's Summer Breeze has her first foal.  Summer Breeze was not scheduled to foal for at least another month I thought, but you never know what the mare wanted to do. She was in a pasture with three other bred mares and two fillies. Got up about 5 am to start chores before going to work and there was a small pinto by the feeder with Summer, her filly and two other mares. I quickly escorted her and the foal out of the pen and onto the lawn.

One thing I have noticed, foals born on pasture (or lawn) are more active and alert than barn stall born ones.

Anyway, YEAH Summer!!!, this FILLY is perfectly marked.

Looks almost exactly like mom on one side and conformation looks just like daddy, Rebel.
Filly 1 day old.

Willows 2012 Foal - Dark Shadows

Toad Hill's Wind in the Willows had her 2012 foal.

Willow is an independent sort of mare, she likes to have her foals on the lawn during the day. Yesterday, Saturday, May 12th, about noon I looked over to the east of the lawn and there was Willow and a dark shadow moving behind her. Immediately I know that she had just dropped her foal. 

I have a theory about horses and where they should foal. Keep them in the barn and they get lazy...the foals are not as eager to get up and run off....let them foal outside and within minutes of dropping a foal they are on their feet, ready to flee if need be.

Of course there is little reason to run these days when you are born on the lawn in a fenced area, but this little kid was up moving off with mom, then nursing in less than 10 minutes.

I am tempted to call him Toad Hill's Dark Shadow. More photos to come.

Foxfire's Showcase filly - The Faerie Queene

Toad Hill's Faerie Queene is now 3 years old. Photos taken 2015 after 3 months of driving, jumping and obstacle training.

SOLD--Offered for sale at $2,000. Three months training in driving, jumping and obstacles. Nice enough to show in halter. Height measured June 19, 2015 36 1/2 to 36 3/4 tall.

Showcase had the first foal of the season at Toad Hill on April 10th. The filly was also Showcase's first. Still trying to think of a name for the filly, she is marked just like mom, with blue eyes. -
(UPDATE: June 8th, her name is Toad Hill's Faerie Queene, we'll call her Queenie.)

After foaling, cleaning the little gal off, nursing, ShowCase decided she had earned a rest and laid down for a few minutes.

It wasn't long before the two decided to take a walk, besides mommy was ready for bunch so she started looking for some nice grass.

The filly is almost a month old in the photo below, still no name but it will come to me. Eureka, Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee, trying to think of something Royal...but give me a break I have friends naming their horses Prince of Wales, Kathyn etc...need something original.

Got it, I remember something about the Faerie Queen in literature. Looked it up on Wikipedia:

"The Faerie Queene is an incomplete English epic poem by Sir Edmund Spenser. The first half was published in 1590, and a second installment was published in 1596. The Faerie Queene is notable for its form: it was the first work written in Spenserian stanza and is one of the longest poems in the English language.^[1] It is an allegorical work, and can be read (as Spenser presumably intended) on several levels of allegory, including as praise of Queen Elizabeth I. Mini Inspects Horse in Van

GrapeNuts is a frequent flyer when it comes to trips in the van although she has only had one trip posted on the blog. She almost thinks it is her private van.

GrapeNuts was just hanging out waiting to see if she was going on a trip again. 

But we surprised her. The beginning of April, because of the warm weather, we decided to get the big Horse out for a trip to the shop and get a tune up.
 
What kind of horse gets a tune up? A Troy-Bilt Horse tiller of course!!

GrapeNuts did not think much of this monster getting into her van, the peacock could care less.

After supervising the loading technique, GrapeNuts gave her approval to continue and we finished loading the Horse in the van and driving off to the lawn mower shop.

Too bad GrapeNuts, perhaps next time we go for a ride you can come.

Like Father, Like Son - Blue Roan in Springtime

A while back I compared the various colors that Boones Buckeroo Fancy Pants changed through the seasons in "Fancy Pants - The Transformation".

Today when I went out with the camera, I snapped two photos one of Fancy Pants and the other his son, Little Blue.

Right now they both appear fluffy white with black points, but since Little Blue had his neck clipped a little, you can start to see the roaning showing through.

Too bad I could not get him to pose like daddy.

When I gave Little Blue his first haircut, he looked like the photo above...not fluffy with with dark neck, but light where I clipped and dark fuzzy on body.
Roan coloring is fascinating to  watch just like the colors of the seasons.

Last weekend we were invited to share our minis with the crowd at the Carousel Horse Show held at West World in Scottsdale, AZ.It was a lot of fun and a great trial for the team. I've only gotten to drive them a few times since I finished their team harness, so this little exhibition was a needed trial run before this weeks mini show.As you can see from the pics, they did very well! And when the crowd went wild, clapping and cheering, my team didn't even bat an eye!So now I'm getting things ready for Touch of Class. And I am bound and determined to have a blast!

Of course I was extremely interested in the arched shaf to the "saddle." So I asked for more information. Her reply comes after the next photos.

Hi Susan, the gentleman I purchased this cart from had it custom built from old drawings of circus carts. These were made this way for use under the old big top tents as it allowed freer movement in the tight constraints of the circus rings. It also allowed the animals to perform tricks while hitched to the vehicle.This hitch can be dangerous as it does allow the horse/horses to turn completely 360°, at which point you have no control at all. And with the team, the horses must match hieght and stride or else it becomes very difficult for the horses.It connects with a wire hitch pin to a swivle on the pad for single, on the yoke for double.This isn't a hitch for anything other than level ground that is packed as the horse(s) pull from the saddle and brake from the saddle.

Little Blue's First Haircut -Blue Roan Colt

With such beautiful, and unusually weather I have been hesitant to clip horses. But today, yet another warm, sunny day I decided to see how the little colts would take to getting a haircut. Perhaps not yet ready for showing, but the first step is the most scarey for a little one. What with the noise of the clippers especially around the head and ears...it was a good first try.

Little Blue (actually Toad Hill's Fancy Tanazite) stepped up and volunteered for the adventure.
